So you want to learn how to paint with acrylics? Where do you begin, how do you start? If you're like most beginners, this is probably one of your main issues - where to begin?
Acrylics are a wonderful medium - very versatile and also quite forgiving. Painting with acrylics is in many ways different than painting with oils. Acrylics are water based, water soluble, and quick-drying. They also don't smell as bad as oils do, which is great if you want to paint indoors.
Acrylic Painting For Beginners
OK, so where do you start? Like with all things, you need to start with the basics. Not just the basics of acrylic painting, but the basics of painting in general.
It doesn't really matter, if you want to paint with acrylics, oils, or watercolors - if you want to be good at any of it, you must have a solid foundation.
What do I mean by solid foundation? You must learn the fundamentals - from perspective and composition, to color theory, color combinations, brushwork techniques, distance, depth, and lighting just to name a few.
Is all this really necessary? If you ever want to go beyond the amateur level, then yes, this is a must. I know it sounds a bit daunting, but it's really not as hard as most people believe.
With good step by step instructions all this can be learned relatively quickly. Painting lessons don't have to be expensive or time-consuming. One of the most accessible and affordable way to learn are lessons on DVDs.
The best course in this format that I'm aware of is -
Learn & Master Painting with Gayle Levee. It explains all the fundamentals and takes you step-by-step from start to finished works of art. Highly recommended.
