Portrait painting can be quite challenging and complex. There is a lot an artist has to know in order to produce appealing and desired portraits.

Painting a portrait is not just painting what you see, you must look beyond mere resemblance and accuracy of proportion.

It's usually preferable to go for more flattering representation rather than literal likeness. Believe me, most clients won't mind. It's great if you have a chance to get to know your client beforehand and learn something about his or her personality. Just remember that most portraits will require some degree of artistic license.

How To Paint A Portrait?

Many artists prefer to work from photos. This is definitely something that is recommended for beginners, because it allows you to take all the time you need. In the following videos you will find out how a master painter Irv Rudley goes about painting his portraits. Learn and enjoy.
